But still the clever north wind was not satisfied. It spoke to me of towns yet to be visited, friends in need yet to be discovered, battles yet to be fought..

This is a Mans World
So I know I have mentioned before that I am the only female to work in our restaurant period. I like how this is a very true fact. Though, I don't think it really hit me til today. So I always wondered where all the cute boys I see on the street live and work. I mean they were never my neighbors or co-workers. Today I realized as I was walking into our kitchen the collection of men I work with. They are not bad looking. They all have females interested in them. They all have great attitudes. They are all definitely male. How do I fit in here? I have never felt out of place or that I don't belong so it just boggled me how perfectly I fit here with a crew full of males. I have never really needed female companionship at work. What even boggled me even more is how they all accept me and like me. They feel comfortable with me. As I with them. Being in a kitchen we are sometimes put in awkward positions but yet they are not awkward. It's me. Me to them is just Bree. The girl they all work with.
Me and Zach were joking the other day. Although not many words were used. That if we ever played a game of charades we would totally dominate! We hold complete conversations without talking. We finish each others sentences or sometimes we don't even have to finish the sentence or to begin it. We know exactly what we mean. He mentioned this to his girlfriend and she thought it was funny. In a kitchen you learn to dance together. To move in a fluid and purposeful motion with other bodies in place. You learn how your partner(s) moves. You speak to each other with nods and hand motions since yelling across an open kitchen to each other is not really an option or quite appropriate when service is going on.
Yesterday was the 49ers game against the Saints. I know my own brothers have been talking about this game for a while now. For those of you whom don't know I have 3 older brothers. Two of them are diehard Raider Fans and the other is a hardcore 49ers Fan. I am a 49er fan. Being in a kitchen, well if you have seen on TV a kitchen crew catching glimpses of games in a tiny TV in the back room, well it's not too far off. Especially when you have an all male crew, excluding me of course. Except in our kitchen we use a computer out by the reception desk (closest thing I can come to mind to call it). We were checking the score every once in a while. Do quick huddles of score checking. We watched the last minute and me and Roger (our house manager) screamed. While everybody else was sad or indifferent. My brother (fellow 49er) texted me how much of an epic game this was and I believe it for the little tiny of it I did catch. I can't wait to watch the rerun on NFL NETWORK!!! I am pumped. Go 49ers! Hahah yes sometimes I do love working with males. Otherwise, I would have never caught that epic last minute for myself and would have read it later without all the sparks and whistles. :)
So needles to say. This is a mans world, but you can do nothing, nothing, without a woman or a girl :)

Cheese
Today at work I got the time to stand around and look pretty. Ha! It is starting to slow down so we didn't have too many customers and there were times when we looked around for something to do. When you are on the move for so long, you can't just stop and smell the roses. You do that after. :) I think we suffer more when it's slow. The waiters today threw one of their dessert orders to the trash. Since they had not told me what to make they had to frantically look everywhere for it. They couldn't remember if it was a flour less chocolate and a cheesecake, or a flour less chocolate cake and a cheese plate. See how this can get confusing. Anyways, they looked in the recycling trash cans for what seems ages. They found nothing. They moved on to the other trash can and found it! Keep in mind that they are been frantically looking for this for a while now. Get this, the paper read, flour less chocolate cake and cheese! Bahahaha! What help that was. So we ended up making all three. So to whoever was in that table. You're welcome. :)
Also during service one of my co-worker was looking for some pliers that I had previously put away during the day. I don't ask questions but I see is trying really hard to cut a piece of a metal hanger. He struggled quite a bit to get the angle just right to make the cut but he gets the job done promptly. I still ask no questions and continue to do my work. A few minutes later he comes back to the kitchen from the dining room and gives Chef a nod that he couldn't get it done. Whatever task he was up to I guess he failed. I'm not really a curious person, well not when it comes to peoples task or personal business. After we were already cleaned up and almost ready to go home I read the note that my co-worker left on the table for the owners to see in the morning. By this time the only people in the kitchen is me and Zach (my co-worker). The first sentence of the letter says "The door to the bathroom got locked accidentally." HAHA I laughed out loud and comment, he mentions this is why he was trying to cut the hanger. I understand but I got check out the situation for myself. Indeed the bathroom door is locked. Poor customers! I come back a minute or two later and happily announce as I'm putting a bobby pin on my hair "it's open." He looks at me with an amused look and says "I should've just asked you." HAHA

Weddings.
So with yet another wedding (rumored so far) to be happening in my family well it got me curious on the whole institution of the wedding ritual. Those who know me know that I do not enjoy weddings. I know I'm horrible. Anyways I realized I know almost nothing of weddings. Not having attended many or paid any attention to those I did. When my brothers got married, well I was too young to pay attention. Anyways, with my recent siblings getting married and with them wanting me in their wedding. Well I thought I'd do some research. Yes, I know sort of embarrassing! Not that I still have gained much knowledge but I have found some really hilarious things! For example you honestly have to read this!..http://www.ehow.com/how_2070280_catch-bridal-bouquet.html Anyways, I didn't know who did what or who was responsible to do what etc. etc. I want to be well prepared for what my role would be in these weddings to come. I mean there is possibly no polite way to tell a sibling you do not want to be in their wedding. Thus I must succumb to a new experience (I was going to say horrible experience but I decided to go with the positive outlook ). Wish me luck. As far as my research goes, well I didn't get too far. I was reading about the bridal bouquet toss and the significance and history behind it. While I was in Texas (I'm sure you'll read more about this once I decide to continue on the overview of my trip!) I attended a wedding with Kendell Wilson. Her cousin was getting married. I went more mainly for curiosity. When the bouquet toss came along. We were already ready to leave, our jackets on, our purses over our shoulders. I mean we were ready to hit the road. Someone stopped us and asked if we could join the bouquet toss. A look around pitifully showed the lack of single women in this wedding. They desperately needed our numbers. So I decided to stand and be part of the crowd. Well the bouquet was tossed and it was coming straight at me! I panicked. I jumped back. HAHAHA. Someone stepped in front of me, to my relief, and caught the bouquet. I know. You just don't know, okay, it was a horrifying moment. I mean these things can get vicious! You have no idea. I feared for my life..........

Clean Fryer Oil Makes Me Happy
So this was my snack at work today. Brie cheese with some raspberries and crust-inis made from our homemade sourdough bread.
So...... Busiest time of the year! Just finished! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the holidays are past and I will hopefully be able to catch up on sleep and rest! Everyone is completely stoked! We were joking today at work, but not really, one of my co-workers was saying how he could NOT do another day at work. I replied with "I definitely could if it was an 8 hour work day." My other co-worker replied "8 hour work day! what is that? and yes definitely if it was only an 8 hour work day." We have all slaved during this past week. I have not had a day of rest. For a long time. So right now starts the beginning of my 3 day off weekend! My co-worker said " Don't take it personal but I don't want any of you calling me. I don't want to see any of you. I love you all but I'll see you Thursday." Ditto. :) So, I made a stop to Safeway before arriving home. Frozen Pizza-check, chips-check, bag of gummy worms-check, sodas in the fridge-check, frozen dinners in the fridge-check, soup cans-check, not having to leave my apartment for the next few days-check. I want to be as lazy as possible and not have to go further than my kitchen! Ah sweet sweet bed! I added new things to my Netflix queue yesterday before going to work. You know just getting ready for the impending moment where I'd have to time to watch it. So don't take it too personal but........... I might just say no when you ask me to go out for coffee. I just hope I don't have any nightmares where Chef is calling off for amuses and intermezzos. You have those when you work as much as we do. Dreams about work. Then you wake up and go to work. Come home from work and go to sleep. See a pattern here? Ah! I don't have to think about that for another 3 days! It really is the little things. Like sleep. Movies. Chips. Pizza.

The Life of a Cook
So how did I spend my time as the clock turned 12 you ask? Well it wasn't like last year. Last year I was taking a giant Christmas Tree off the top of my truck that just happened to be there when I got off work! Random! haha. This year, I was in the dish pit with Vicente our dishwasher and Zach my fellow co-worker cook separating silverware! My phone blinked as the clock turned 12 and I turn to Zach as I'm collecting butter knives and say "Well Happy New Years." Yep. That's about how it went down. Now I'm starting the new years with some Pizza and beer. I ended it with some foie torchon with lobster tail and greens with citrus covered in a delicious pan sauce. Ah! The life of a cook.
